N.J. man charged with assault after allegedly firing gun at police

An Irvington man was charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly fired a gun at police officers Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Kelvin Sanders, 48, was arrested and also charged with possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, said Tracy Bowers, the Irvington Police Director of Public Safety.
Police officers encountered Sanders, who had a gun, near 673 Chancellor Avenue, Bowers said. He fired a shot at the officers and fled the scene as officers pursued him, Bowers said.
He was apprehended “after an extensive search,” with help from police officers from Irvington, Newark, State Police and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, Bowers said.
Sanders will be transported to the Essex County Detention Center pending arrangement, officials said.
“All officers and participating agencies did a great job in with assisting in apprehending this suspect and I commend them for their bravery and courage and effort in keep being our community safe,” said Bowers.
